California: Invited to the Table

Leslie Taylor, Deputy Director for the Community Services Division at CSD, was recently selected to participate in a national work group. The work group is the Community Action Network: COVID-19 Response Group (CRG) convened by the National Community Action Partnership (NCAP) and National Association for State Community Services Programs (NASCSP).

This work group is comprised of state and national associations, local agencies, and state CSBG lead agencies. The group will utilize the diverse expertise of the network to develop a national strategy for demonstrating how Community Action Agencies have maximized innovation and flexibility to provide services, leverage resources, and promote partnerships and achieve measurable outcomes in their communities during this crisis…

CalCAPA Academy News

CalCAPA Academy launched in 2018 with the goal of making more T/TA resources available to CAA staff, board members, and leadership.  Since its inception, the academy has logged the learning activity of over 300 learners in the network and added dozens of learning activities specifically curated or developed for CAAs.  All CalCAPA member agencies have free access to CalCAPA Academy and may register for an account at the login screen…

Course material from the academy is presented in three ways: eLearning – Instructor-Led Training – External Resources.  See the newsletter for examples of courses offered.

Community Action & Head Start Alignment

Almost a year ago in July 2019, the Office of Head Start and the Office of Community Services issued a dear colleague letter encouraging the tightening of partnerships between Community Action and Head Start program leaders.  In light of the many shared objectives to support low-income communities, CalCAPA is exploring ways to partner with Head Start resources like the California Head Start Association, the Office of Head Start, and other similar organizations supporting the Region IX Performance Innovation Consortium…'

…the Human Capacity and Community Transformation (HCCT) Center of Excellence, an arm of the National Community Action Partnership, is in the process of assembling a Head Start Task Force to include select representatives from around the country to inform the future alignment activities of Head Start and Community Action.  CalCAPA received and submitted seven nominees for the task force from CAAs in all four of the R9PIC member states…Examples of successful existing partnerships are described in the July 17, 2018 Case Study released by the National Community Action Partnership and features programs at Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo and Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency.

$100,000 in Finance Education Funding

CalMoneySmart grant program for the 2020-21 fiscal year has officially launched!  CalMoneySmart is a grant program created by Senate Bill 455 (Ch. 478, Stats. 2019), authorizing the Department of Business Oversight (DBO) to award grants of up to $100,000 each to develop and deliver free financial education and empowerment programs to help unbanked and underbanked communities…
