A review of 2018 General Assembly accomplishments
The 2018 session of the Indiana General Assembly provided a few life preservers for working families, but little was done to create the systemic improvements needed by nearly 1 in 3 Hoosiers left underwater economically. In our March 22 blog post, we review the Institute’s agenda to “right the ship” for working families, with items specifically chosen to be easily implemented, even in the short session with no budget bill. Then we compared the agenda with the final tally of what the General Assembly accomplished in 2018, so policymakers know how to correct the course in the future.
HB1245 to reform Indiana’s occupational licensing laws
(Find out how CAAs can apply these changes to clients!)
This session the General Assembly lifted the blanket ban on many occupational licenses for people with prior criminal records, which affects nearly 1 in 4 Hoosiers. Occupational licensing can lead to a 10 to 15 percent increase in income and can lift people out of low-wage jobs, improving the economic well-being of those who hold licenses. Our March 27 blog post explains how HB1245 will reform Indiana’s occupational licensing laws. It also touches on how Community Action Agencies can apply these changes to the benefit of clients, their families and their communities.
