Could you live on a food budget of $23 a week?

In honor of Community Action Month, the Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies has initiated the Ohio Community Action Food Stamp Challenge from April 30-May 4.  The goal of the Challenge is to increase awareness and give participants a view of what life can be like for the 1.75 million low-income Ohioans receiving food stamps.

The Blade - AWARENESS EFFORT: Ohioans challenged to dine 5 days on $23

Could you live on a food budget of $23 a week?  That's the question facing Blade staffers this week as they participate in the Food Stamp Challenge.

The average food stamp recipient receives $138 per person, per month, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.  As of February, more than 1.8 million Ohioans were receiving the assistance. In 2011, an average of 1.7 million people in Ohio received food assistance monthly. A total of $3 billion in benefits were issued in 2011 in Ohio; the program is federally funded.
